Traffic police of Cyprus began to penalize drivers for smoking, eating or drinking at the wheel. Unamenables have to pay 50 Cyprian Pounds (about $120 USA).
Such measure has to reduce the amount of traffic accidents, the part of which occurs because driver loses control in search of light or cigarette. According to the majority of local drivers, new measures will reinforce safety on the roads. One of automobilists said that sometimes authorities acted too strictly, however, exactly such kind of measures have a suitable effect on Cypriotes.
Cyprus is a leader among countries members of European Union concerning accidents with lethal outcome. Thus, in 2006, on the South of the island 86 people dead, and that is the high rate for such small nation, the population of which is about 700 thousand people.
